The World Convention of Churches of Christ/ Christian Churches in India ended on Sunday 15 January with a joyful Indian style worship service. More than 3,000 people from 29 nations and 21 states of India participated in the event. It has been a wonderful opportunity to hear first hand from many individual Christians about the progress of the gospel around the world.
Perhaps the most challenging session was to listen in a smaller session to the stories of those who have been severely persecuted in Orissa. Its not appropriate to go into details but the stories of beatings, killings, rapes, the burning down of Christian homes and churches is appalling. We heard from those who had experienced these atrocities themselves.
We also heard from someone whose job is had been to kill and persecute Christians but who, in the process, became a Christian himself. He has become an effective evangelist and church planter amongst the very people who have opposed the gospel. God is doing some remarkable things in India.
